Twin Arches

Twin Arches Lane, Jamestown, TN 38556

For quick and easy-to-moderate hiking, try the Twin Arches Upper Loop or the Middle Creek Loop. The iconic sandstone Twin Arches make up the largest natural arch in Tennessee. The Middle Creek Loop features rock shelters and high cliffs to immerse hikers in the wilderness of the Big South Fork.

Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area

Dramatic gorges, natural arches, and rock shelters are characteristic landforms of the Big South Fork.

With a variety of overlooks, choosing depends on the level of adventure you seek. The easiest access is to the East Rim Overlook, which only requires a 300 foot walk on a paved trail.

For easy to moderate access, the Leatherwood Loop and Sunset Overlooks are a great option. Sunset overlook can be accessed with an easy 1.3 mile each way trek. Slightly more strenuous is the Leatherwood Trail, which features an overlook. If you do this one, once you reach the river, follow the guard rail to pick up the trail on the right. At Leatherwood Ford, you can enjoy the Angel Falls Rapid Trail and the Angel Falls Overlook- both of which are less than 3 miles one- way.

The void of streetlights and being miles from civilization make for an incredible night sky in the Big South Fork. The East Rim Overlook provides a paved trail and an easy walking distance. Bring a red headlamp, your blanket, and some pillows for gazing at the stars.
