Conservation Status

  • The Channel Catfish is also known as the Channel Cat. 
  • This fish is the official state fish of Tennessee. 
  • The Channel Catfish is native to the Cumberland River Basin, but is invasive in many other parts of the world where it has been introduced. 
  • The Channel Catifish has an exceptional sense of taste and smell, which helps it find food in murky water. It’s taste buds are all over its body, with the highest concentration on its “barbels” or whiskers.
