- Coyotes are top predators in the Cumberland River Basin. They play an important role in ecosystems, regulating the populations of smaller predators – possums, raccoons, cats, etc – that prey on small birds and other animals.
- Coyotes can run over 40 mph, about as fast as a greyhound.
- Dogs run with their tails up. Coyotes’ tails point down between their legs as they run.
- Coyotes are related but much smaller than our county’s most common wolves – the gray wolf. Coyotes can weigh up to 40 lbs. Gray wolves can weigh 180lbs.
