  • The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is one of our largest butterflies and is common in a variety of habitats. 
  • Larvae on the leaves of tulip poplars and other host plants are easily mistaken for bird droppings. 
  • Native trees like black cherry, tulip poplars, black willow, river birch, and basswood are ihost plants for the species. Joe Pye weed is a favorite source of food.
  • Males of the species are often seen “mud-puddling.” Gathered together, they obtain salt and nutrients from the moist soil.
