Eastern Hercules Beetle

Dynastes tityus

Classification

Conservation Status

  • The Eastern Hercules Beatle is a species of rhinoceros beetle.
  • One of the largest beetles in North America (and the largest scarab), they are harmless to humans.
  • Only the males within the species grow horns, which are used to battle other males for mates. Those with abundant access to food grow larger horns.
  • Hercules beetles need decaying wood to develop. Allowing some fallen limbs to decompose in your garden or yard can enable this species and other beetles to have the food and habitat they need to survive.
