  • The Giant Leopard Moth is a nocturnal moth with a three-inch wingspan. 
  • Caterpillars of the species are known as “woolly bears,” and can roll themselves into a protective spikey ball.  
  • According to folklore, wooly bears can be used to predict winter weather. A wide orange band means winter will be mild. A narrow orange band means winter will be harsh. 
  • Native species of willow, broadleaf plantain, violets, and magnolias are important sources of food and habitat for the Giant Leopard Moth.
