Conservation Status

  • Gulf Fritillaries are also known as Passion Butterflies. 
  • Tennessee’s state wildflower – the passionflower or “Maypop” – is the host plant for Gulf Fritillary butterflies.
  • Only native passionflower are host plants for the species. Some introduced passionflowers – such as Red Passion Flower – are poisonous. 
  • Black spikes may make orange Gulf Fritillary caterpillars look tough, but the spikes are harmless.
