Conservation Status

  • Hellbender are the largest salamanders in North America and the only existing species within the genus Cryptobranchus. They are known by many names including snot otters, lasagna lizards, devil dogs and more. 
  • Covered in light-sensitive cells, the hellbender uses its entire body to see. 
  • Hellbenders breathe through pores in their skin. 
  • Hellbender populations have decreased dramatically due to siltation, construction of dams, and capture. They like waterways with swift-moving water and large, scattered rocks.
