Conservation Status

  • The average wingspan of a Luna Moth is 4.5 inches but some have been measured 7 inches or more, making it one of the largest moths in North America.
  • After it leaves its cocoon, the Luna Moth lacks a mouth or digestive system and only survives about a week.
  • Luna Moths can twirl the long tails on their wings, confusing predatory bats that rely on echolocation.
  • Native host plants include American persimmon, sweetgum, walnut, hickory, and sumac.
