  • Weighing little more than a penny, ruby throated hummingbirds fly nonstop 900 miles across the Gulf of Mexico during their migrations. 
  • The species can fly forward and backwards. 
  • A ruby throated hummingbird’s egg is the size of a pea. 
  • Hummingbirds require nectar and insects to survive, and will also feed on tree sap found in sapsucker wells.
