  • Southern flying squirrels are nocturnal mammals that can be found in mature, deciduous forests with abundant species of old oaks, hickories, and beech trees. 
  • The southern flying squirrel can fly for over 150 feet, making 90 degree turns in flight. 
  • They nest in cavities made by woodpeckers or build their own nests from sticks and leaves. 
  • They are highly social and will even fly in groups.
